Big Rig Accident Statistics
Big rigs, a more common term for tractor-trailers and semi-trucks, are a common sight on U.S. highways. Both of these terms are used to refer to large trucks that are used to transport goods.
Tractor-trailer collisions are much deadlier than car accidents. It’s mainly due to how big, and heavy big-rig trucks are. Stopping distance increases for heavily loaded trucks.
In the United States, a person is killed every 15 minutes as a result of a collision involving a semi-truck. About 5,000 truck drivers per year are killed in the United States in roughly 500,000 annual traffic accidents.
Each year, 113 people in California are killed in truck accidents, and nearly 3,000 more are injured. Two hundred to three hundred people are killed or injured every year in California because of truck-related accidents.
Between 2009 and 2015, there was a dramatic increase in fatalities caused by accidents involving semi-trucks. More than ten percent of traffic fatalities in 2015 involved tractor-trailer trucks.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration mandates that, below 40 miles per hour, a safe following distance of four seconds be kept from large trucks. A second must be added to the calculation if your speed is greater than 40 miles per hour.
