Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident is a type of traffic collision in which one of the drivers fails to stop and provide information at the scene. These accidents can be especially frustrating because, in addition to dealing with the damage to your vehicle, you may also have difficulty tracking down the responsible driver.

There were 2,948 fatal hit-and-runs in California between 2010 and 2019, resulting in 3,056 deaths. These statistics are higher than in any other state. Additionally, California had 8.8 fatal hit-and-runs for every 10 billion miles traveled during this period, higher than any other state except the District of Columbia and Arizona.

Despite advances in vehicle safety features, road infrastructure, cycling, pedestrian lanes, and traffic signals, automobile, truck, bicycle, pedestrian, and motorcycle accidents, including hit-and-runs, continue to be prevalent.

You can do a few things if you find yourself in this situation. First, try to get as much information about the other driver as possible, including their license plate number. Then, contact your insurance company and file a claim. Finally, if you can track down the other driver, you may want to consider filing a police report.
