Pedestrian Accident Statistics

In response to an increase in pedestrian and bicycle accidents around the city, San Luis Obispo police are stepping up enforcement operations. However, the number of accidents is still increasing.

According to data from the California Office of Traffic Safety, 893 pedestrians were killed on the streets in 2018, while over 14,000 were injured. Pedestrian fatalities in California are almost 25% higher than the national average.

Being a pedestrian, on the other hand, is not without danger. While driver error is still the leading cause of these accidents, other factors contribute to the problem. For example, pedestrians are more likely to be distracted by their phones or iPods than drivers. They’re also more likely to be wearing dark clothing at night. And finally, they’re more likely to walk in areas that aren’t well-lit or don’t have sidewalks.

Pedestrians should stay alert and visible, and drivers should always yield to pedestrians, even if they’re not in a crosswalk. No matter who is at fault, the best way to prevent pedestrian accidents is for drivers and pedestrians to be more aware of their surroundings and to follow the rules of the road.
