Truck Accident Statistics

Tractor-trailers and semi-trucks colloquially referred to as “big rigs,” are common on American roads. Large trucks used to transport goods go by either of these names.

Collisions involving tractor trailers are far more lethal than those involving passenger vehicles. This is large because of how massive big-rig trucks are. Trucks carrying a lot of cargo take more time to stop.

Every 15 minutes, a person is killed in a semi-truck accident in the United States. There are approximately 500,000 traffic accidents in the United States each year that result in 5,000 deaths among truck drivers.

Truck accidents kill an average of 113 Californians per year and injure nearly 3,000 more. On average, truck-related accidents in California result in the deaths or injuries of 200-300 people annually.

The number of people killed in accidents involving semi-trucks reached an all-time high between 2009 and 2015. In 2015, tractor-trailer trucks were involved in more than a tenth of all traffic fatalities.

When traveling at less than 40 miles per hour, drivers are required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to maintain a 4-second distance from large trucks. If you’re going faster than 40 miles per hour, you’ll need to add another second to your calculation.
