Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics

When two or more vehicles are involved in an accident, rear-end collisions are the most frequent type. When multiple cars crash into each other, the result is commonly referred to as a “multi-car pileup.” When one car crashes into the back of another, it can cause a domino effect, or “chain reaction.”

Since 2014, accidents involving multiple vehicles have resulted in the deaths of more than 10,000 people. The drivers in these accidents almost always perish. Over 7,000 people lose their lives each year as a result of car accidents in the United States. The statistics reveal just how dangerous it is for motorists when an accident involves more than one vehicle.

According to research conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, almost two million accidents involving multiple vehicles occur annually. If we add up all the accidents that happen in a year, this accounts for nearly a third of them. When more and more cars, trucks, and other vehicles collide with each other, the risk of serious injury or death rises dramatically.

These incidents can be caused by a wide variety of factors, including drivers’ inability to see clearly under certain weather or lighting conditions, excessive road congestion, poor road quality, and other similar factors. Multiple vehicle collisions frequently occur on highways and roads where speeding is permitted. Driving in heavy traffic reduces your ability to see potential hazards in time to stop for them. These crashes could occur more frequently if the weather played a role. The greater the concentration of people in a given area, the greater the probability that some very serious issue will arise.
