Single-Vehicle Crash Statistics

In the United States, a single-vehicle crash is defined as a motor vehicle crash that does not involve another vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these crashes account for more than two-thirds of all fatalities on U.S. roads. In 2015, there were 35,092 people killed in single-vehicle crashes, and an additional 2.3 million people were injured.

Single-vehicle crashes are most common on rural roads, where they account for more than three-quarters of all fatalities. However, they are also a major problem on urban streets, where they cause more than one-third of all traffic fatalities.

Most single-vehicle crashes occur during the daytime, and the majority involve male drivers between the ages of 16 and 34. Speeding is a factor in more than one-third of all single-vehicle crashes, and alcohol is involved in about one-quarter of them.

Single-vehicle crashes are particularly dangerous because they often result in rollovers or ejections. In 2015, more than 9,000 people were killed in single-vehicle rollover crashes and another 3,000 were killed in ejections.
