According to the California Highway Patrol, a pedestrian was struck and killed by a big rig early Thursday on Highway 101 near Goleta.
According to the authorities, the collision occurred at about 3:00 a.m. on Highway 101, north of Turnpike Road.
Officer Jonathan Gutierrez said that the man, who has not been named, was trying to cross from the side of southbound Highway 101 to the center divider when he was hit in the center lane.
James B., a 66-year-old truck driver from Clearlake, California, stopped his truck and called 9-1-1. Emergency crews came to the freeway just north of Turnpike Road.
At the scene, the victim was said to be dead.
Gutierrez said the semi-truck driver was not hurt and did not seem drunk or high.
Because of the closed lanes, southbound traffic on the freeway was backed up for several miles, and surface streets in Goleta were also backed up.
The CHP was looking into what caused the accident.
