Head-On Crash Statistics
The NHTSA’s Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities in 2021 says that about 42,915 people will die in car accidents that year. This is 10.5% more than the 38,828 deaths reported in 2020.
The NHTSA says that the expected number of road deaths is the highest since 2005, and the Fatality Analysis Reporting System has never seen a more considerable percentage increase. In this case, there was a head-on collision.
When the front of one vehicle hits the front of another, this is called a “head-on collision.” Head-on collisions are some of the most dangerous kinds of car accidents, and they often cause severe or fatal injuries.
According to the Insurance Information Institute, in 2018, a little more than 10% of all deaths in the United States were caused by head-on crashes.
A head-on collision usually happens when a car crosses the center line or the median and hits another vehicle. Driving on the wrong side of the road, whether on purpose or by accident, can also cause a head-on crash.
A head-on collision can happen for many reasons, like when a driver is drunk, distracted, trying to pass on a two-lane road, or changes lanes quickly because of construction or stopped traffic. Head-on collisions can happen because of road problems, car problems, or too much speed or loss of control.
