According to a recent survey, 44 individuals died while moving by foot, motorcycle, automobile, or bicycle in San Diego in 2019. In 2016, San Diego ranked sixth in the United States for the number of pedestrian deaths.

Pedestrians were responsible for 14% of road deaths nationally between 2008 and 2017, while California had a higher rate of 22%. In 2018, 893 pedestrians were killed on California streets, a 26% rise over the previous year.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) statistics on pedestrian deaths in 2017, the leading causes of pedestrian accidents include failure to yield right of way, improperly crossing a street or junction, and standing, lying, playing, or working on a highway.
