The Camry’s passenger was unharmed, but the officer suffered a laceration to the left side of his head.
The San Diego Police Traffic Division is still investigating the crash.
Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
Rear-end collisions are the most common type of accident involving two or more vehicles. On the other hand, when multiple cars collide, this is called a “multi-car pileup.” When two vehicles collide head-on, it can cause a “domino effect” or “chain reaction.”
Over 10,000 people have been killed in multi-car accidents since 2014. The drivers are almost always killed in such incidents. Every year in the United States, more than 7,000 people lose their lives in automobile collisions. The data shows that multi-vehicle crashes are more dangerous for drivers than single-vehicle collisions.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that there are nearly two million multi-vehicle accidents every year. It’s estimated that 31% of annual accidents can be attributed to this cause. Serious injuries or death are much more likely to occur when numerous cars, trucks, and other vehicles collide with one another.
Numerous factors can contribute to these occurrences, such as when motorists’ vision is impaired by adverse weather or lighting, when traffic volumes are high or when roads are of poor quality. Highways and other roads where speeding is legal are hotspots for multiple-vehicle pileups. The ability to see potential hazards in time to stop for them decreases when driving in heavy traffic. If weather played a role, these collisions might happen more frequently. The higher the population density, the more likely it is that a major problem will develop.
