[09-02-2022] Siskiyou County, CA - Two People Killed in a Fire Accident on Mill Street

Two people were killed in a fire accident in Mill Street on Friday, September 02, 2022.

The Mill Fire broke out at the company’s facility in Weed, a small town on Interstate 5, about 280 miles (451 kilometers) northeast of San Francisco.

According to a news release from Roseburg Forest Products, the mill generates its own electricity in a cogeneration facility fueled by wood waste. The ejected ash is sprayed with cooling water by a “third-party-supplied machine.”

A wood products company is investigating whether the fire was caused by a possible failure of a water-spraying machine that cools ash at its veneer mill.

Hundreds of people fled as the fire spread.

The fire destroyed 107 structures and damaged 26 others. It eventually spread over 6 square miles (15.5 square km).

The fire was 65% contained, with little activity on Wednesday.

Authorities had not yet determined how many homes were destroyed as of Saturday afternoon, but they were working quickly to assess the damage.

During the ongoing investigation, Roseburg Forest Products Co. also announced that it planned to contribute up to $50 million to a community restoration fund. Roseburg’s fund will help residents with temporary shelter, medical supplies and treatment, transportation, clothing, food and water, and child care services.

The accident is to be further investigated.
