Big Rig Accident Statistics

Without semi-trucks and other commercial vehicles, the economy would not be able to work. Every year, goods worth billions of dollars are moved by trucks in the United States. When there are a lot of semi-trucks on the road, other drivers are more likely to get into accidents.

More people die in semi-truck accidents than in any other vehicle collision. Because of their size, other vehicles have difficulty getting around big rigs.

The Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the U.S. Department of Transportation shows that the number of deaths caused by big rig trucks has increased by 30% since 2009. In 2017, about 4,102 people died in traffic accidents caused by significant rig drivers being careless.

Most people who die or get hurt in California do so in commercial truck accidents. In 2019, 3,316 fatal car accidents killed a total of 3,606 people. More than 300 people died in heavy-duty truck accidents, which killed 44 people.

To avoid getting hit by a commercial truck as you pass it, stay as far away as possible from the truck’s blind spot. Sitting on the truck’s passenger side, which has a more prominent blind spot than the driver’s, is the most dangerous choice. When changing lanes, the only place to pass is on the driver’s side.
