Motorcycle Accidents Statistics

Over 8.6 million registered motorcycles demonstrate their enduring appeal as a cost-effective means of transportation. But, of course, any discussion about motorbikes must inevitably turn to their lack of stability and capacity to protect riders and passengers from catastrophic damage in the case of an accident.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that 42,338 people died in motor vehicle accidents in 2020. The rate increased as compared to 39,107 fatalities in 2019. Roughly 75% of motorcycle accidents involve collisions with another automobile.

Motorcycle riders involved in fatal collisions in 2020 had greater percentages of alcohol impairment than drivers of any other type of motor vehicle.

Intersections are the most common location for a motorcycle collision, with the other vehicle breaching the motorbike’s right-of-way and other traffic restrictions like changing lanes and running the light or stop sign.

Motorcycles are less stable than other vehicles since they have two wheels rather than four, hence the rider’s skill level is essential for maintaining control. Whatever the cause, riding a motorbike puts you at a higher risk of accidents than driving a car, truck, or SUV.
