Fatal Motorcycle Crash Accident Statistics
Motorcycle crashes are a severe problem in Santa Clara County. In 2016, there were 68 fatal motorcycle crashes in the county, which is rising. Most of those crashes involve a single vehicle and a motorcycle driver. This is up from 6 deaths in 2015. Most of these fatalities (8 out of 9) resulted from head-on collisions. Most crashes happen on weekdays, between 3 pm and 6 pm.
One concern from these statistics is that motorcyclists are not as visible to other drivers as those in cars or trucks. This can lead to motorists not seeing motorcyclists, often resulting in a deadly crash.
A large percentage of those killed in motorcycle crashes are not wearing helmets. This is likely because California does not have a universal helmet law, which puts riders at a severe head injury collision risk.
Drivers can take several actions to stay safe while riding a motorcycle: Always wear a helmet. Ensure other drivers notice you and turn on their turn signals when changing lanes or turning. Be cautious when driving and be aware of your surroundings. Never drink and drive.
Motorcycles are much smaller than cars, so it is easy for drivers to miss them. If you are impaired, you are more likely to crash and seriously injure or kill yourself or someone else.
