Multi-Vehicle Crash Statistics
When more than one car collides with another, no fewer than three drivers or passengers are injured. These accidents frequently occur when one individual rear-ends two or more vehicles.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), multiple vehicle collisions account for 40% of all fatal car accidents. Almost 13,000 people were killed in multi-vehicle crashes involving passenger vehicles alone. In 2020, multiple-vehicle crashes accounted for 58% of car occupants’ deaths.
Multi-vehicle accidents can happen for various reasons, including driver error, slippery roads, and reckless driving. When several cars are involved in an accident, the potential for serious injury or death is increased significantly.
One of the most dangerous aspects of multi-vehicle accidents is the “chain reaction” that often occurs. When one car slams into another, the force of the impact can cause that car to hit other vehicles nearby. This domino effect can cause a pile-up that can involve dozens of cars.
Multi-vehicle accidents can also be difficult to clean up and can result in significant traffic delays. In some cases, the wreckage from an accident can take hours to clear, which can cause massive backups on the highway.
