Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents are common in the United States. A total of 4,735 pedestrians died in 2013, and 66,000 were injured. There are several reasons why pedestrian accidents happen, including when a driver doesn’t see a pedestrian in time or when a pedestrian crosses the street against the law.

One of the most common ways pedestrians are is injured when a car hits them crossing the street. When a pedestrian is hit by a car, they have little to no protection, so this type of accident can often be fatal. It is always a good idea for drivers to watch pedestrians, especially at crosswalks and intersections.

A pedestrian accident occurred every year on average in the five years before. Approximately half of these accidents result in injuries, while about 5% result in deaths. Late afternoon and early evening are the most common times for these accidents.

Pedestrians can use crosswalks and walk in the opposite direction of traffic to stay safe, but drivers must also share the road. By looking in both directions, ensure you have plenty of time to cross the street before the next car arrives.
