According to the California Police Highway Patrol, the collision transpired around 4 a.m. The officers answered numerous 911 calls from the Redwood City and San Francisco stations.

There is also a report that a silver Honda is traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of I-280.

The police officer started a traffic stop on Serramonte Boulevard to slow down traffic and shield other drivers from the wrong-way driver.

Just north of Hickey Boulevard, a CHP patrol car with its lights and siren activated came across a wrong-way vehicle traveling quickly.

At that point, the officer purposefully drove the patrol car directly into the motorist’s path, traveling the wrong way. One CHP officer, one bystander, and the driver going the wrong way were all hurt in the ensuing collision.

The wrong-way driver was detained for felony DUI after the collision.

The suspect received treatment for injuries he sustained in the collision at a nearby hospital. After receiving medical attention, he will be arrested at the San Mateo County Jail on felony DUI causing injury and felony driving the wrong way causing injury-related charges.

DUI Crash Accident Statistics

Pedestrians are especially at risk for accidents that result in injuries or fatalities. Since they are not protected in the event of a significant accident, which could cause severe damage, they are the group most at risk.

A DUI crash occurs every 63 minutes, on average, in the state of California. These statistics may not paint a pretty picture, but they don’t reveal that injuries are much more severe in many DUI cases than one might imagine.

According to the NHTSA, drunk driving accidents claim the lives of about 30 Americans daily. Drunk driving accounts for about 29% of all traffic-related fatalities in the United States. Sixty-one percent of these drivers have blood alcohol levels above the limit of.08.

Over time, the number of pedestrian fatalities in the US has significantly increased. Compared to other traffic-related causes of death, pedestrian fatalities increased by 27% between 2007 and 2016 but decreased by 14%.

The DUI crash accident statistics in San Mateo County are staggering and clearly show a severe public safety issue. The number of fatalities and injuries brought on by DUI accidents is a serious problem that the community must tackle head-on. The county must focus on ways they can provide resources to keep drunk drivers off the road and protect innocent citizens who do not want to be involved in a tragic DUI crash accident.
