Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Aside from being refreshing, biking and walking are effective forms of transportation and healthier alternatives to driving. However, most significant biking and pedestrian injuries and deaths are caused by motor vehicle crashes.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 3,477 people were killed, and an estimated 391,000 were wounded in distracted driving accidents in 2015. Pedestrian fatalities rose 10% that year.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety, 893 pedestrians died, and over 14,000 were wounded on California streets in 2018. California has a pedestrian fatality rate around 25% higher than the national average.

Lighting, pedestrian location, overspeeding, intoxication, drunkenness, and driver inattention are all variables that lead to pedestrian accidents. Pedestrian accidents can be avoided if motorists are more aware of their surroundings and avoid risky driving practices.
