Fatal Single Vehicle Crash Statistics

Fatal single-vehicle crashes are a significant problem in the United States, with an average of over 6,000 deaths per year and increasing over time. Much media coverage around fatal single-vehicle crashes focuses on drunk driving and speeding as the primary causes of these crashes. However, other factors contribute to these tragedies.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that a single-vehicle crash caused 31% of traffic fatalities in 2016. In addition, these types of accidents account for nearly half of all roadway deaths overall.

In 2017 alone, there were 14,580 fatal single-vehicle crashes in the United States. While that number is down from 2014’s count of 15,851, it is still high enough to warrant concern. This is particularly true when considering that these accidents are entirely preventable through awareness and education about safe driving practices.

To reduce these numbers, we need to understand better what causes them in the first place so we can implement preventative measures like education programs and roadway improvements to reduce driver error and keep pedestrians safe from harm’s way.
