Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident is a traffic collision in which the at-fault driver does not stop to exchange information or render aid to the victim. Hit-and-run accidents are a serious problem in many states, often resulting in serious injuries or even death.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of people killed in hit-and-run accidents climbed by 60% in 2016, reaching 337. Almost 682,000 hit-and-run accidents occur in the United States yearly, with pedestrians usually being the victims.

Unfortunately, these accidents are often difficult to investigate, as there are usually no witnesses and little evidence left at the scene. In some cases, investigators can use surveillance footage or license plate recognition technology to identify the at-fault driver.

Still, tracking down the driver and holding them accountable can be difficult. That’s why hit-and-run accidents are often called “crimes of opportunity.” The driver knows they can escape the accident if they keep driving.
