Fatal DUI Crash Statistics

The reality is that drunk driving is a leading cause of car accidents in California and nationwide. In fact, on average, one person dies every two hours in an alcohol-related motor vehicle crash.

Between 2008 and 2016, over 1 million people in California alone suffered injuries in accidents caused by alcohol. And while alcohol-related fatalities have decreased over the last decade, they are still at historically high levels—especially in comparison to other states.

According to the data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), California had 1,646 fatal DUI crashes in 2019. These crashes led to 2,966 deaths. The average blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of drivers who died in these accidents was 0.14 percent, meaning they consumed enough alcohol to impair their driving ability. This number decreased from 0.15 percent in 2018 to 0.17 percent in 2017.

Don’t drive while intoxicated. Limit your alcohol intake before the event, and stick to it! If you think you’ve consumed too much alcohol, ask a friend or member of your family to drive you home until you’re sober again.
