DUI Accident Statistics
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, over 10,000 people are killed in drunk driving accidents annually in the United States. That’s nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities. And these numbers don’t even consider the non-fatal injuries and property damage that can result from a drunk driver.
The financial cost of these accidents is also staggering, with estimates ranging from $59 billion to $130 billion per year. Drunk driving is a preventable problem, yet it continues to claim lives and destroy families daily.
One way to help put an end to this epidemic is to support tougher DUI laws and penalties. For example, ignition interlock devices could be required for all offenders, regardless of their blood alcohol level or prior offenses. These devices prevent a vehicle from starting if the driver has been drinking, effectively reducing drunk driving accidents. Taking steps like this can help make our roads safer for everyone.
