Big Rig Accident Statistics

Big rigs, the common name for tractor-trailers and semi-trucks in the United States, are a common sight on the country’s highways. These terms refer to the same thing: large trucks are used to transport goods.

Automobile accidents involving tractor trailers are among the deadliest imaginable. The enormous size of semi-trucks plays a significant role. Stopping a big rig requires more time and effort than in a passenger vehicle.

A person is killed in a crash involving a semi-truck about once every 15 minutes in the United States. Five thousand truck drivers out of a total of 500,000 people died in traffic accidents annually in the US.

Truck-related accidents in California account for about 113 annual fatalities and nearly 3,000 yearly injuries. Between two hundred and three hundred people per year lose their lives in accidents involving trucks in California.

Between 2009 and 2015, semi-truck accidents claimed an unprecedented number of lives. If you’re going faster than 40 miles per hour, you’ll need to add another second to your calculation.
Within a 40-mile-per-hour zone, drivers are required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to give large trucks at least four seconds of extra space. More than 40 mph necessitates an extra second.
