Big Rig Accident Statistics

The economy would not be able to work without semi-trucks and other commercial vehicles. In the United States, trucks move goods worth billions of dollars every year. When there are a lot of semi-trucks on the road, other cars are more likely to crash.

Semi-truck accidents kill more people than any other kind of car accident. Big rigs are so big that it’s hard for other cars to get around them.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) shows that the number of deaths caused by big rig trucks has gone up by 30% since 2009. In 2017, about 4,102 people died in car accidents that were caused by careless big rig drivers.

Most deaths and injuries in California are caused by accidents involving commercial trucks. In 2019, a total of 3,606 people died in 3,316 fatal car accidents. More than 300 people died in accidents involving heavy-duty trucks, of which 44 died.

Stay as far away as possible from a commercial truck’s blind spot as you pass it to avoid getting hit. The most dangerous choice is to sit on the passenger side of the truck, which has a larger blind spot than the driver’s side. Only on the driver’s side can you pass when changing lanes.
