Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Pedestrian accidents are a serious public safety concern. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,735 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in the United States in 2018. That averages out to one pedestrian being killed every 88 minutes. What’s even more alarming is that pedestrian fatalities have been on the rise in recent years, increasing by 35% since 2009.

Many factors contribute to pedestrian accidents. One is that drivers are simply not paying enough attention to their surroundings. With the increasing use of cell phones and other distractions, it’s easier for drivers to take their eyes off the road long enough to miss a pedestrian crossing the street. Another factor is that many urban areas are simply not designed with pedestrians in mind. Narrow streets, lack of sidewalks, and heavy traffic make it difficult and dangerous for pedestrians to get around.

So what can be done to reduce the number of pedestrian accidents? For one thing, drivers need to be more aware of their surroundings and make an effort to look out for pedestrians, especially when turning or entering crosswalks. Pedestrians also need to be more cautious when walking near traffic and avoid distractions like headphones or cell phones that might prevent them from hearing approaching vehicles. And finally, cities need to do more to prioritize pedestrian safety when designing streets and intersections. This might include adding more crosswalks and sidewalks, installing warning signs or lights at busy intersections, or even reducing traffic speeds in areas where pedestrians are particularly vulnerable. By taking these steps, we can help make our streets safer for everyone.
