Multi-Vehicle Collision Statistics
A multi-vehicle collision is a vehicle accident that involves more than one vehicle. This type of traffic mishap is known as a “pile-up,” especially when involving six or more automobiles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 307 people were killed in multi-vehicle collisions in California in 2019.
Multi-vehicle accidents are common on roads when hundreds of automobiles travel at high speeds close to one another. This makes it difficult for many drivers approaching an accident to stop at a safe distance, perhaps causing them to collide with other vehicles.
Multi-vehicle accidents can be caused by weather conditions, such as sudden changes in visibility or slick roads. However, more often than not, they result from human error. One common cause of multi-vehicle accidents is distracted driving. When drivers take their eyes off the road, even for a few seconds, it can lead to disaster. Another frequent cause of these accidents is speeding. When drivers exceed the speed limit, they risk losing control of their vehicle and colliding with other cars. By understanding the causes of multi-vehicle accidents, we can work to prevent them from happening in the future.
