One person died after a pedestrian crash involving a commuter train in Moreno Valley on Friday, September 16, 2022.
Around 3:10 p.m., the fatality happened. Both Metrolink and the Riverside County Fire Department reported an incident in the vicinity of Van Buren Boulevard and Interstate 215.
According to reports from the scene, several engine crews were dispatched to the area and found the dead pedestrian next to the Perris Valley Line tracks. The pedestrian’s identity and gender were not immediately made public.
The train stopped at the location with 27 passengers on board and the driver.
No one on board the train was hurt, he claimed, and plans were being made to get the passengers to their destinations.
The No. 709 train had just left the downtown Perris station on its way to the downtown Riverside station, where it would continue to Los Angeles.
According to Johnson, the following train from Perris to Los Angeles is scheduled to leave at 5:30 p.m. Less than 50 people make up the typical Friday afternoon crowd.
Metrolink employees and sheriff’s deputies were looking into why the victim was on the tracks.
Fatal Pedestrian Crash Involving Train Statistics
Fatal pedestrian crashes involving trains are a significant problem in the United States. According to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), there were over 1,300 fatal pedestrian collisions with trains in 2018. This number is up from around 900 in 2016, which increased from the 800 reported in 2015.
The FRA is working hard to develop ways to prevent these collisions and make our country’s rail system safer for everyone who uses it.
A fatal pedestrian crash involving a train is an incident in which a person was killed by being struck by a train. Fatalities can occur due to being hit by the train itself or by debris that falls off the train during collisions.
Many factors contribute to these crashes: poor visibility at crossings, lack of warning systems such as lights or gates, distractions for drivers (such as cell phone use) and pedestrians (such as talking on phones), and unsafe behavior by pedestrians themselves (such as jaywalking).
