A pregnant woman and her unborn child were killed by a Livermoor teen after a sideshow when he allegedly crashed into another car while attempting to elude police in Sacramento County on Friday night, September 16, 2022.
The crash occurred around 9:11 p.m. at Rio Linda, a town just north of Sacramento.
California Highway Patrol units were dispatched to Rio Linda to disperse what appeared to be a sideshow that had more than 100 vehicles and pedestrians blocking the intersection of Elverta Road and Dutch Haven Boulevard.
One CHP unit reportedly started a traffic stop on a Honda Accord, but the driver allegedly failed to yield while officers dispersed the crowd.
According to the CHP, the 17-year-old Livermore boy was operating the sedan while carrying three passengers: a 17-year-old Copperopolis boy, a 21-year-old Union City man, and an 18-year-old Antioch man.
The Accord is accused of blowing through a red light at the intersection of Dry Creek Road and Elkhorn Boulevard during the subsequent pursuit, colliding perpendicularly with a Honda Civic.
According to the CHP, the 28-year-old Honda Civic driver was taken to the hospital with serious injuries, and the fetus suffered fatal injuries.
The passenger was taken to a nearby hospital after complaining of moderate pain.
The Honda Accord’s passengers were taken to nearby hospitals after complaining of pain and injuries.
According to the CHP, the Livermore teen was detained following the collision, evaluated by medical professionals for minor injuries, and booked into Sacramento County Juvenile Hall.
According to the CHP, drugs, and alcohol don’t seem to have been a factor in the collision.
According to the North Sacramento office of the California Highway Patrol, the 17-year-old boy, whose name has not been disclosed due to his minor status, was detained on suspicion of murder, felony reckless evasion of police, and felony evasion by driving in the opposite direction of traffic.
