Pedestrian Accident Statistics

When a pedestrian is involved in an accident, there is a significantly increased risk that they will sustain injuries. Because they have no protection against cars, pedestrians are in the greatest danger when cars are on the road. In 2020, vehicles on our nation’s highways were responsible for the deaths of nearly 7,000 pedestrians.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in the year 2020, the vast majority of pedestrians who were killed in traffic accidents did so in urban areas (80%), on open roads (76%) rather than at intersections (24%), and when it was dark (76%).

As a pedestrian, you may want to take precautions to protect yourself. Do not use headphones or any other devices that could potentially distract you while you are walking whenever you have the opportunity to cross at a crosswalk or a significant intersection.

Always watch pedestrians and be aware of their surroundings when driving, but this is especially important in areas with high pedestrian traffic volume (such as near schools or playgrounds). By taking these measures, we will be able to contribute to the overall improvement of the safety of our roads.
