Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics

A hit-and-run accident occurs when the at-fault driver fails to stop to exchange information or assist the victim. In many states, hit-and-run accidents are a serious problem, frequently resulting in serious injuries or even death.

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, the number of people killed in hit-and-run accidents increased by 60% in 2016, reaching 337. Every year, nearly 682,000 hit-and-run accidents occur in the United States, with pedestrians being the most common victims.

Unfortunately, these accidents are frequently difficult to investigate because witnesses or evidence are rarely left at the scene. In some cases, investigators can identify the at-fault driver using surveillance footage or license plate recognition technology.

Locating the driver and holding them accountable can be difficult. As a result, hit-and-run accidents are frequently referred to as “crimes of opportunity.” The driver knows they can avoid the accident if they continue driving.
