Motorcycle Accident Statistics
U.S. Department of Transportation’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) recorded 5,014 deaths involving motorcyclists in 2016. After a decline established in the early 1980s, a rise was seen in 1998 and continued through 2008.
According to data collected by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists face an astounding 16 times higher risk of injury and 35 times higher risk of death in a collision compared to those riding in a car.
Cars failing to see a motorcycle account for nearly two-thirds of motorcycle accidents at intersections. Motorcycles, due to their smaller size, are more vulnerable to being involved in accidents.
Most of the roads in California are listed on motorcycleroads.com’s “Top 100 Motorcycle Roads” page. More motorbikes are registered in this state than in any other in the country. Nearly 800,000 motorcycles are registered in the state.
A total of 15,527 motorcyclists were injured, and 541 were killed in accidents in 2017.
