Truck Accident Statistics

Every day, large trucks travel across the country, delivering goods and supplies. While most truck drivers are experienced and cautious, accidents involving these large vehicles do happen. According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, there were almost 4,900 fatal truck accidents in the United States in 2018.

So, what are the most common causes of truck accidents?

  • Driver Fatigue. Truck drivers often have to work long hours to ensure their deliveries are made on time. This can lead to them feeling tired behind the wheel, increasing the risk of an accident.
  • Distracted Driving. Many things can distract a truck driver, including their cell phone, GPS, other passengers in the cab, and even outside events such as rubbernecking at an accident scene.
  • Speeding. Truck drivers may feel pressured to speed to make their delivery on time or get ahead of traffic congestion.
  • Inclement Weather Conditions. Inclement weather conditions such as rain, snow, and ice can make it more difficult for drivers to see and be seen by other motorists and make it harder for them to control their vehicles.
  • Improper Truck Maintenance. If brakes aren’t properly working, this increases the risk of an accident.

By understanding some of the most common causes of truck accidents, truck drivers and motorists can help keep themselves safe when sharing the roadways. If you’re a truck driver, remember always to drive cautiously, take breaks when needed, avoid distractions, obey posted speed limits, and maintain your vehicle properly. If you’re driving near a large truck, give them plenty of space and avoid making sudden moves.
