Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Statistics

A fatal two-vehicle collision is a tragedy for the families and friends of those involved, but it’s also an opportunity to learn from the experience and prevent future deaths.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has collected data on fatal two-vehicle crashes in the United States since 1995. NHTSA estimates that more than 25,000 people have died in that time in these accidents.

While fatal two-vehicle crashes have been dropping since 2005, they still occur far too frequently. The most recent data show that there were 6,246 fatalities in 2018 alone. This means that more than 100 people die every day in this kind of crash—more than twice as many deaths as in all other types of fatal crashes combined!

Every year, thousands of people are killed in car accidents. Numerous things, such as driving while distracted, driving while intoxicated, going too fast, and poor road conditions, can result in these accidents.

Even though might have been prevented many of these accidents with better safety measures, some of them were. The Fatal Two-Vehicle Collision Prevention Act will require all vehicles to be equipped with sensors that detect when another vehicle is approaching and warn drivers if they are getting too close.
