Fatal Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
Every year, thousands of people are killed in hit-and-run accidents. This statistic is especially alarming because preventing such tragedies would be relatively easy.
Roads are hazardous environments, so the effects of a fatal hit-and-run accident can be devastating. 2,300 fatal hit-and-run accidents are anticipated in 2016, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
In recent years, this number has remained essentially constant. Thousands of people still die yearly in fatal motor vehicle accidents, even though this figure represents less than 1% of all such accidents.
41 years old on average, 81% of those injured in fatal hit-and-run accidents are men, while only 19% of those injured are women. Internal bleeding (21% of the time), blunt force trauma (37% of the time), and brain injuries (16%) are the most common causes of death for these victims.
We must educate ourselves on preventing these accidents by making our communities safer for everyone—especially those most vulnerable.
