According to the authorities, the return of wet weather caused a big rig crash injuring several people off Interstate 80 in the Sierra Monday morning, September 19, 2022.
The crash occurred just after 6:30 a.m. west of the Donner Summit rest area on Interstate 80.
It is unclear what caused the accident, but the roads were definitely slick, and a large truck went down a drainage ditch.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver escaped with only minor injuries, even though there was noticeable damage to the vehicle’s cabin.
The investigators are still trying to determine what caused the collision.
Big Rig Accident Statistics
Big-rig is a term for the big tractor-trailers and semis we often drive next to on the road. Either of these is the name for big trucks that carry things.
Tractor-trailer accidents are the most deadly compared to other types of car accidents. The main reason for this is how big semi-trucks and other “big rigs” are. When a semi-truck carries a lot of cargo, it takes longer to stop.
In the United States, one person dies every 15 minutes in a crash with a semi-truck. It is thought that about 500,000 transportation accidents kill about 5,000 truck drivers in the United States every year.
Every year, about 113 people die in truck accidents in California, and nearly 3,000 people are hurt. Every year, 200 and 300 people die in accidents involving trucks in the Golden State.
Between 2009 and 2015, more people died in accidents with semi-trucks than at any other time in history. In 2015, 11% of traffic deaths were caused by a tractor-trailer.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration recommends that drivers give themselves 4 seconds of space when following a heavy truck going less than 40 miles per hour. For speeds over 40 miles per hour, you need an extra second.
