Fatal Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Accidents involving pedestrians frequently happen in the US. 4,735 pedestrians died and 66,000 were injured in 2013, according to estimates. These mishaps can occur for several reasons, including a driver failing to notice a pedestrian in time or a pedestrian crossing the street against the rules.

When a driver strikes a pedestrian crossing the street, it is one of the most frequent pedestrian accidents. Because pedestrians have no natural protection when hit by a car, this kind of accident frequently results in fatalities. Always look for pedestrians, especially when driving near intersections or crosswalks.

Over the prior five years, there were 927 pedestrian accidents on average per year. About 50% of those accidents result in injuries and 5% in fatalities. Most of these mishaps occur in the late afternoon or early evening when visibility is poor.

While there are many ways for pedestrians to stay safe, including using crosswalks and walking against traffic flow, drivers must also share the road. Make sure you have enough time to cross the road before the next car arrives by looking both ways before you do so.
