A 39-year-old military police officer and father of six identified as Nicholas M. is in critical condition after a tragic accident on Camp Pendleton on Monday, September 19, 2022.
The crash occurred on Monday, about five miles inside Camp Pendleton.
Merced was traveling on his motorcycle on his way to work as a military police officer when he collided with a car.
According to Melissa Merced, Nicholas’ wife, the other motorist was traveling the other way. According to Merced, they were trying to make a turn but failed to notice him, so they T-boned him.
According to Melissa, a nurse, he was reportedly airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
The 39-year-old Merced is still in critical condition four days later.
According to Melissa, Nicholas has had surgery every day since he has been confined at the hospital.
Merced sustained fractures to his back, arm, knee, and feet in addition to an open pelvic fracture. Blood clots in his lungs, a heart attack, renal failure, and sepsis are all results of complications.
He was put into a medically induced coma on Thursday.
Merced is a father of six, including four children with disabilities. His one-year-old twins have been diagnosed with cerebral palsy.
Merced retired from the Navy last year after 20 years of service. He started his job as a military police officer this spring as a civilian, stationed at a Navy base close to Camp Pendleton.
A Gofundme page was created by a fellow military spouse to raise money for medical and other costs.
According to Melissa, Merced will be moved to a rehab center in a few weeks.
Officials from Camp Pendleton have confirmed that an accident investigation is ongoing but have not provided any further information.
