Big Rig Accident Statistics
Big-rig is a term for the big tractor-trailers and semis we often see on the road. Either one of these names is for a big truck that moves things.
Compared to other types of car accidents, tractor-trailer accidents are the ones that kill the most people. This is because semi-trucks and other “big rigs” are so big. When a semi-truck has a lot of stuff on it, it takes longer to come to a stop.
Every 15 minutes, a semi-truck crash kills someone in the United States. It is thought that about 5,000 truck drivers die every year in the United States in about 500,000 transportation accidents.
Every year, about 113 people die, and almost 3,000 get hurt in truck accidents in California. In the Golden State, between 200 and 300 people die yearly in truck accidents.
More people died in accidents involving semi-trucks between 2009 and 2015 than at any other time in history. In 2015, a tractor-trailer was responsible for 11% of traffic deaths.
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration suggests that when following a heavy truck going less than 40 miles per hour, drivers give themselves 4 seconds of space. For speeds over 40 miles per hour, you need one extra second.
