The crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. on Interstate 5 in Sacramento County.
According to a news release from the South Sacramento station of the California Highway Patrol, a 2006 Toyota Camry was traveling north on I-5 close to Hood Franklin Road at about 70 mph when the driver lost control and veered off the shoulder, causing the car to flip multiple times and “cartwheel” at least once.
According to CHP officials, the driver, a 21-year-old Elk Grove man, was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.
A 20-year-old Stockton man thrown from the right rear passenger’s seat was declared dead at the scene by Cosumnes CSD Fire Department personnel.
According to the CHP news release, the Toyota’s front passenger was also ejected. The only passenger who was not ejected, the left rear passenger, crawled out of the car and dialed 911.
The CHP claims that no other witnesses have reported seeing the collision.
The two occupants who survived, a 23-year-old man from Isleton and a man from Stockton, provided statements to CHP officers before being taken to hospitals with what were considered major wounds.
The CHP investigators concluded that it was clear that no seat belts had been worn after looking at the occupant restraint system.
According to authorities, it is not thought that alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
According to the CHP’s crash report, the driver is thought to have overcorrected after losing traction on the slick road during the rain-related collision.
