Elevator Accident Statistics

You might assume that accidents in elevators don’t happen often. This is obviously not a once-in-a-million occurrence. According to the CDC, about thirty people per year lose their lives (and over seventeen thousand are seriously injured) in accidents involving elevators and escalators.

Approximately 900,000 elevators are responsible for 18 billion annual passenger trips in the United States. Around 20,000 people per year are transported in groups of five on average. It takes an average elevator to travel the four or five floors or about 40 feet. Every year, about 27 people are killed, and about 10,200 are injured in elevator accidents.

Injuries caused by the mechanisms of these modes of transportation are common. To die in an accident, someone must either fall into the shaft or become wedged between the device and the wall or the shaft. There are a lot of moving parts and no way to keep passengers safely in place, so the devices are not reliable, and passengers are not well protected while in transit.

About half of all elevator-related deaths each year occur in the workplace, highlighting the risk that construction workers face when dealing with elevators. You have a legal right to receive the safety education and tools necessary to install, maintain, or disassemble elevator components without risking injury on the job.

Los Angeles County Elevator Accident Lawyers

Millions of people use elevators regularly as part of our commutes to and from work, homes, and other locations, and for other purposes. Every day, an estimated 300 million Americans use elevators to travel between floors of buildings such as office and shopping centers, apartment buildings, airports, hospitals, department stores, and hotels.

Since taking elevators is so commonplace, most of us don’t give much thought to our safety when entering or exiting a car. Thousands of people are injured every year due to elevator accidents caused by mechanical failures and human error.

A serious accident can have lasting psychological and monetary effects on those involved. However, the law aids in making sure that innocent passengers are not forced to foot the bill for such incidents and instead places the responsibility on the shoulders of those who caused them.

You might not immediately associate elevators with danger, but they have been the cause of fatalities. The law may allow you to seek financial compensation for any injuries sustained in an elevator accident, regardless of their severity.
