[09-21-2022] San Mateo County, CA - Pedestrian Accident at San Mateo Bridge Results in One DeathA police chase led to a fatal traffic collision after the suspect ran out of gas on eastbound California State Route 92 on Wednesday, September 21.

The crash occurred around 4:30 a.m. on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge.

The crash began when the San Mateo Sheriff’s Office pursued a 2020 white Ford Mustang in Half Moon Bay, which it later lost on Interstate 280 close to Black Mountain Road in Hillsborough.

But when the suspect got out of the car to continue running away on foot, they were struck by a passing car because it appeared the Ford may have run out of gas.

During the early morning commute, the right and center lanes approaching the eastbound causeway of the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge were closed due to a traffic collision on eastbound California State Route 92, leaving one lane open.

The California Highway Patrol issued a warning to motorists to expect delays and to use alternate routes to avoid the area.

The crash remains under investigation.
