Pedestrian Accident Statistics

California is the 16th most dangerous state for pedestrians in the United States. Between 2009 and 2017, pedestrian deaths in California increased by 38.4%, whereas they increased by 34.5% nationally. The 2017 injury accident data shows that there were 10,020 accidents reported in San Bernardino County.

Pedestrian fatalities on American highways are on the rise. Both pedestrians and motorists help to make roads safer for pedestrians. Here are four tips on avoiding pedestrian accidents:

  • If a sidewalk or pathway is available, always use it instead of walking on the road. Even if you have to step out of your way slightly, using the sidewalk or pathway is worth it. If there is no sidewalk or pathway available and you must walk on the road, always walk facing traffic to see oncoming vehicles.
  • Wear bright clothing when walking at night and carry a flashlight so drivers can see you. You can also purchase reflective gear such as vests, arm bands, and even shoelaces to make you more visible to drivers after dark.
  • Being a pedestrian does not mean you do not have to follow traffic laws. Make sure you obey all traffic signals and crosswalks. It may be tempting to jaywalk when there are no cars around, but even then, it’s against the law and increases your risk of being hit by a car.
  • Whenever possible, always cross streets at designated crosswalks with working traffic signals. Even if there is no crosswalk available, look for a well-lit area where drivers can see you better before crossing the street.

Following these four tips can help avoid being involved in a pedestrian accident. However, even if you take all precautions possible, accidents can still happen due to the negligence of others.
