Statistics on Traffic Accidents

Car accidents are all too common. There are over six million car crashes in the United States each year. That’s an average of about 16,000 accidents per day. Many of these accidents result in injuries or even fatalities.

Many factors can contribute to a car accident. Distracted driving, for instance, is one of the leading causes of accidents. This can include texting while driving, talking on the phone, eating or drinking while driving, or even just talking to passengers in the car. It’s important to keep your hands on the wheel and your eyes on the road. This will help you stay focused and increase your reaction time if something unexpected happens.

If you find yourself in a collision, it is important to know what to do to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. Check for injuries. The first step is to ensure that you and your passengers are not seriously injured. If anyone is injured, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately. Do not try to move an injured person unless they are in immediate danger of further injury.

Call the police. Even if there appears to be only minor damage, it is important to call the police so that they can make an official report. The report may come in handy later when dealing with insurance companies.

Exchange information with the other driver/drivers involved. Get the name, address, phone number, driver’s license number, and insurance information from the other driver or drivers involved in the accident. If there are witnesses, get their names and contact information as well.

Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved and any visible injuries sustained by those involved. It is also a good idea to take pictures of the surrounding area, traffic signals or signs, and skid marks on the road (if present).

Contact your insurance company as soon as possible to report the accident and start the claims process. Be sure not to admit fault or sign anything without first speaking with an attorney if you believe you may be at fault or partially at fault for the accident.
