Pedestrian Accident Statistics
California’s highways are growing increasingly hazardous to pedestrians. California is the 16th most hazardous state for pedestrians in the United States. Almost 7,000 pedestrians were killed in motor vehicle incidents on our country’s highways in 2020.
Even though pedestrians have the right of way, they are still at risk of being involved in accidents. In fact, pedestrian accidents are some of the most common accidents on our roads. Many factors contribute to these accidents, including distracted driving, speeding, and failure to yield.
However, bad weather is one of the most common causes of pedestrian accidents. When visibility is low, or roads are slick with rain or snow, it can be very difficult for drivers to see pedestrians, leading to tragic accidents.
As a result, everyone needs to exercise caution when walking in bad weather. Pedestrians should wear bright clothing and stay aware of their surroundings, and drivers should slow down and be extra vigilant when visibility is obscured. By taking these simple precautions, we can help to prevent pedestrian accidents.
