Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
We’ve all seen them—people walking down the street completely oblivious to their surroundings, engrossed in their phones. It’s become so common that it’s easy to forget how dangerous it can be.
Every year, thousands of people are injured or killed in hit-and-run accidents. According to the National Safety Council, 11,100 people were involved in hit-and-runs in 2018 alone.
Hit-and-runs are serious crimes and can result in heavy fines and jail time. In some states, leaving the scene of an accident is a felony offense. If you are involved in a hit-and-run, the best course of action is to stay at the scene and call the police. If you leave, you may be subject to criminal charges. In addition, your insurance company may refuse to pay for damages if it determines that you were at fault for the accident. Even if you do not think you are at fault, it is always best to cooperate with the police and exchange insurance information with the other driver. By following these steps, you can help to ensure that everyone involved in the accident is safe and that property damage is minimized.
