Motorcycle Crash Accident Statistics

Motorcycle collisions are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities on American roads. Although they make up a relatively small percentage of all vehicles on the road, motorcycles are involved in an excessively high rate of collisions. 2019 saw 474 motorcycle fatalities in California.

There were 5,014 motorcycle-related fatalities in 2016, according to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) of the US Department of Transportation. Early in the 1980s, a downward trend was established, but beginning in 1998, a rise persisted until 2008.

According to data from the NHTSA, motorcycle passengers are 35 times more likely to die in an accident and 16 times more likely to suffer injuries.

The prevalence of motorcycle accidents is primarily due to several factors. First, drivers have a more challenging time spotting motorcycles because they are less visible than other vehicles. Second, riders on motorcycles are less physically protected than those in cars and trucks, making them more susceptible to injuries in collisions.

Lastly, motorcyclists are more likely to take chances on the road by speeding or weaving in and out of traffic, which raises the possibility of an accident. Although there isn’t a single way to prevent motorcycle accidents, awareness and education are essential for development. The number of road accidents can be decreased by increasing awareness of the dangers associated with motorcycle riding and instructing riders on how to operate their vehicles safely.
