According to the authorities, a deputy with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department was taken to the hospital after their car collided with another vehicle in South Los Angeles on Sunday morning, September 25, 2022.
The collision happened just before five in the morning at the intersection of Van Ness and Marine avenues in Gardena.
The deputy’s cruiser was clearly damaged on the driver’s side front end in a local news video.
A gray sedan that was the other vehicle also suffered damage.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, the sedan’s driver ran away on foot as soon as the collision occurred.
The authorities had set up a perimeter but had not found the suspect by 7:30 a.m.
When they were taken to the hospital, the deputy was awake. There was no immediate word on their health.
The crash remains under investigation.
Hit-and-Run Accident Statistics
It’s illegal to flee the scene of an accident. Every day in the United States, an accident occurs that involves a hit-and-run driver. Since 2006, at least 2,000 people have been killed in hit-and-run accidents across the United States.
There has been an increase in the number of accidents caused by drivers who then flee the scene in recent years. Hit-and-run drivers are responsible for a 7% increase in fatalities since 2009. Increases in hit-and-run accidents are a major contributor to the rising toll of road fatalities that cannot be attributed to intentional acts of violence.
While this trend occurred in every state, it was most severe in California.
3,056 people lost their lives in traffic-related accidents across the United States, with 2,948 of those accidents occurring in the state of California alone.
The prospect of being seriously hurt in a car crash is terrifying. The other driver’s refusal to stop and take responsibility can make things much worse.
People who are under the influence of alcohol or drugs, are operating a vehicle illegally, or are afraid of being arrested are more likely to flee the scene of an accident.
