Fatal Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), deaths on bicycles fell by 3% this year, from 871 to 846. Bicycle accidents account for 80% of all traffic fatalities, while cars account for only 2%.

Bikes have the same legal status as cars in California. In general, bicycling is governed by the same laws as driving a car. They are obligated to stop at red lights and ride in a straight line.

Many motorists disregard cyclists’ rights and ride dangerously close to them. Injuries and even fatalities are a real possibility.

The highest number of bicycle-related fatalities in the United States has occurred in California. It’s not surprising that these types of accidents occur frequently in urban areas, given the high concentration of these modes of transportation there. There were approximately 455 fatalities involving cyclists in California from 2016 to 2018.
