Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 743 bicyclist fatalities in 2018. This accounted for 2% of all traffic-related deaths that year. While this number may seem small, it represents a significant increase from previous years. The number of bicyclist fatalities has been rising for the past decade.

There are several possible explanations for this trend. First, more people are choosing to commute by bicycle. This is partly due to the increasing cost of car ownership and the availability of cycling infrastructure in many cities. Second, distracted driving is becoming more common as our lives increasingly rely on technology. This means that drivers are less likely to see cyclists on the road. Finally, speeding is also a factor in many accidents. When drivers go too fast, they have less time to react to potential hazards.

Regardless of the reasons, it’s clear that bicycle accidents are a serious problem. By understanding the risks and taking steps to prevent accidents, we can make our roads safer for everyone.
