Motorcycle Accident Statistics

Riding a motorcycle is often seen as a freeing experience. The wind rushing through your hair as you cruise down the open road can be an incredible feeling. Unfortunately, motorcycle accidents are all too common, and they can often be catastrophic.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcycle fatalities occurred 27 times more frequently than passenger car fatalities in 2017. This stat is even more staggering when you consider that there are millions fewer motorcycles on the road than passenger cars. So, what makes motorcycles so much more dangerous?

There are a few factors that play into this. First, motorcycles offer very little protection in the event of an accident. This means serious injuries are much more likely to occur when a motorcycle is involved in an accident than a passenger car. Second, motorcycles are much smaller than passenger cars, which makes them harder to see on the road. This increases the likelihood of an accident occurring simply because the driver of another vehicle didn’t see the motorcycle coming.

So, how can you avoid being involved in a motorcycle accident? First and foremost, always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle. A good helmet can go a long way in protecting your head and brain in the event of an accident. Secondly, ensure you’re visible on the road by wearing brightly colored clothing and using reflective tape on your bike. And finally, be cautious when riding and always assume that other drivers on the road don’t see you. Following these tips can help keep you safe when riding a motorcycle.
